Since 1901, the New Year in Philadelphia kicks off with a unique city tradition: the Mummers Parade.

The Mummers Parade features thousands of participants from more than 40 organized clubs parading from South Philadelphia to Center City in elaborately themed costumes, with over-the-top floats, pageantry, and music.

Crowds line Broad Street to watch the antics and celebrate the New Year. The high point of the parade takes place near City Hall and the Pennsylvania Convention Center, where the parade culminates with each club performing in front of judges. Limited bleacher seating is also located in this area.

The Independence Visitor Center is the exclusive location to purchase tickets for bleacher seating at the Parade. Tickets are also available for the Fancy Brigade Finale Shows, which take place inside the Pennsylvania Convention Center on New Year's Day; and MummersFest, a four-day, behind-the-scenes glimpse into preparations leading up to the Parade.

>>CELEBRATE revelry

The New Year is all about celebrating, and nobody does that better than the Mummers. The Mummers are comprised of more than 40 clubs organized into divisions: Comics, Wench Brigades, Fancies, String Bands, Fancy Brigades, and the new Philadelphia division. Each division has its own traditions and roles, which they incorporate into performances that they practice all year and unveil for the Parade on New Year's Day. Spectators can enjoy the sight of 10,000 colorfully lavish men, women, and children strutting down one of the city's main streets. The Mummers' camaraderie and fun is matched only by their fierce competition to win first place in their divisions.
