Betsy Ross House

The Betsy Ross House is a historic house museum in the heart of Philadelphia’s Old City, celebrated as the site where upholsterer and flag maker Betsy Ross is believed to have lived when she sewed the first American flag. The 18th-century home, with its winding staircases, tiny rooms, and charming courtyard, offers visitors an intimate glimpse into the life of an ordinary, middle-class tradesperson.

Inside, guests can explore period-furnished rooms and interactive exhibits that highlight Betsy Ross’s life, her upholstery and flag making craft, and the broader story of Philadelphia’s role in the American Revolution. Costumed historical interpreters bring the past to life, while rotating programs and events connect the house’s legacy to themes of patriotism, diversity, women’s history, and civic identity.
