Women's Committee for the 250th
About:
Women continue to play an outsized role in milestone anniversaries by joining the Committee and supporting transformational legacy projects for the nation’s 250th anniversary. These efforts help elevate the contributions of Philadelphia women to both Philadelphia and American history. Membership requires a one-time donation. This contribution directly supports the projects and includes participation in quarterly meetings and advisory subcommittees through 2026.
More About the Projects:
The Committee is supporting two transformational legacy projects:
- $75,000 grant to the Women’s Opportunities Resource Center to advance women’s financial empowerment
- Restoration of Belmont Mansion, a historic site and former stop on the Underground Railroad.
Programmatic Legacy Project:
Recognizing that financial independence is critical to exercising one’s fundamental rights, the Committee awarded a $75,000 grant to the Women's Opportunity Resource Center (WORC). This grant will fund a Business Pitch Competition that provides capacity building support, direct access to networks and resources, and cash awards for small businesses that promote gender economic equity.
Physical Legacy Project:
Restoring Belmont Mansion: Saved from demolition in 1986 by Audrey Thornton, over the past 40 years, three generations of African American women have preserved this site and shared its history as a stop on the Underground Railroad. Now, with the support of the Women’s Committee, this powerful symbol of freedom and democracy will be restored and strengthened as an everlasting landmark in Philadelphia’s history.
