Calder Gardens

Calder Gardens invites you into a world where art, architecture, and nature meet in ever-changing harmony. Dedicated to Alexander Calder (1898–1976)—the visionary artist who redefined sculpture—it offers a place for reflection, discovery, and fresh encounters each time you visit.

Designed by Herzog & de Meuron, the 18,000-square-foot building unfolds within lush gardens imagined by Piet Oudolf, planted with more than 250 varieties that shift beautifully with the seasons. Indoors, rotating installations span Calder’s five-decade career, from his iconic mobiles and stabiles to lesser-known works. Instead of following a fixed narrative, the artworks are arranged in dialogue with the architecture, inviting close looking and new ways of seeing.

What you experience at Calder Gardens is never static. Some works remain for years, while others appear only briefly, ensuring that every visit reveals something new. Just as the gardens change with light and weather, the art shifts in rhythm, offering a living, breathing environment that rewards return visits.

Whether you are drawn by Calder’s groundbreaking vision, the serene landscape, or the chance to step away from the city’s pace, Calder Gardens offers an immersive space of beauty and contemplation in the heart of Philadelphia.
