African American Museum in Philadelphia
Founded in 1976 to commemorate the nation's Bicentennial, the African American Museum in Philadelphia (AAMP) holds the distinction of being the first institution established and funded by a major U.S. city to preserve, interpret, and showcase the heritage of African Americans. Since its inception, the museum has provided a thoughtful and comprehensive exploration of African American achievements and aspirations, spanning from pre-colonial history to the present day.
AAMP is dedicated to telling the full story of African American life, encompassing areas such as family, the Civil Rights Movement, arts and entertainment, sports, medicine, architecture, politics, religion, law, and technology. The museum features four galleries and an auditorium, hosting exhibitions centered around its three core themes: the African Diaspora, the Philadelphia Story, and the Contemporary Narrative.
