Eastern State Penitentiary

Opened in 1829, Eastern State Penitentiary was America’s first penitentiary. Designed to inspire penitence in the heart of convicts, its prisons walls once housed the famous gangster Al Capone. Today, the site remains as a historic site filled with crumbling cellblocks and empty guard towers. Who knows what you might find?

Tickets are available for sale online or at the Independence Visitor Center.

Ride the #PhillyPHLASH! Eastern State Penitentiary is conveniently accessible via Stop 9 on the Philly PHLASH Downtown Loop.
