Avenues of Our Founders and Freedom

Through the efforts of the Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides, sections of Market Street and 6th Street in the Historic District of Philadelphia now have honorific names in recognition of their historical significance in the nation.

Market St. from Front to 8th Streets is designated the Avenue of Our Founders, for the four founding fathers who lived here, which is more than any other street in the country: Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, and John Adams.

Sixth St. from Race to Lombard Streets is designated the Avenue of Freedom, for its rich history of African-American leadership in early America, with sites significant in the lives of Ona Judge, Octavius Catto, and Bishop Richard Allen.
