Science History Institute

At the Science History Institute, you can explore the amazing successes, astonishing failures, and strange surprises behind the science that shapes our world.

View the Institute's permanent exhibition, which traces the history of science - from medieval alchemy to modern plastics and everything in between - or play with an interactive touch table to learn the fascinating science behind everyday objects. You won't want to miss Downstream, a temporary exhibition that explores more than 200 years of water analysis and protection in the Delaware Valley and beyond, or the current ExhibitLab, a changing display that showcases specific collections, prototypes, new ideas, and responds to current events.

Visitors can also enjoy a guided family activity, explore special topics and themes with staff, or try a self-guided scavenger hunt, puzzle, or activity sheet. Digital exhibitions and an outdoor exhibition installed on the façade of the Institute's building in Old City Philadelphia are always open.
